This review is from: Sony DVPSR160 DVD Player (New for 2012) (Electronics)

Whilst looking for a new DVD player I came across this item and was happy to go with Sony again seeing as my last one gave good service for 10 years. As it was to connect to my little portable CRT in the bedroom a SCART connector was needed and an HDMI not. This fits the bill perfectly with ease of use, decent (if unspectacular) appearance and an excellent remote control. The remote has a quality feel to it and is uncluttered and with big clear buttons which older people would definitely find an advantage. It has basic functions for (Sony) TV control also.

Power on is quite slow but performance is then superb for a machine at this price and there is no annoying (and energy wasting) red standby LED to keep me awake at night either. The drive tray does look a bit slight but it’s not a cup holder so shouldn’t be a problem with normal use. I’m surprised at the number of reviewers moaning about the lack of SCART lead as very little kit does come with them and they are as cheap as chips to buy anyway but there you go.

It is well worth noting that this item can currently be currently had for well under thirty pounds on the High St though (you know, the place where you have to fill in the paper slips) so shop around before clicking…

    Amazon Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sony DVPSR160 DVD Player (New for 2012) (Electronics)

I bought this because my two year old Philips DVD player lost its ability to read LoveFilm’s rubbish DVDs. As I have the privilege of living in one of our great nation’s broadband not spots, I will have to suffer DVDs for a few more years yet. Fortunately this machine copes much better and has a vastly superior remote control, which even a remote-o-phobe like me can operate. It only has a scart outlet but that’s OK for my 10 year old Sony CRT flat screen telly (which still has a better picture than most LCD/LED screens which cost less than a £1000). Wish all my technology problems were this easily sorted.

You may note that this this review is not based on an Amazon Verified Purchase. I was going to buy it from Amazon, but my local supermarket had it on special offer.

I purchased this D.V.D. player to replace a Sony D.V.D. recorder that had become faulty after almost 10 years of excellent service. Although this is a budget machine, it is my main D.V.D. player, as many of the more expensive and heavily featured D.V.D. players that I considered had functionality I simply did not want, need, or which wouldn’t have been compatible with my still excellent 15 year old Sony Triniton t.v., anyway

It is important to consider when buying this player that it does cost under £30.00. This means that Sony have cut costs by limiting its features, not providing a scart plug, and not building it with a super solid construction. The D.V.D. tray is rather thin (but does have a child-lock), it opens and closes quickly with a clunk and grind rather than the gentle click and whirr of my old machine, and the function buttons on the player are clunky too. That apart, the actual materials used are still of good quality. The remote however is great – small, but well laid out, plus it is sculpted on the reverse making it a joy to hold and use. The menu options accessed through the remote are also well laid out and (with only a little lateral thinking required) comprehensive, relevant and useful,

Now for the most important part: the player’s picture and sound quality. Quite simply, they are superb. Better than the machine it replaces, and better than many other far more expensive players that I have seen. This is where Sony have made sure the money was spent. Disc data is loaded quickly, which is a good sign that Sony have not scrimped on laser quality. The player also has a surprisingly wide range of useful picture and audio options – even with just the one digital out; these options are really useful when setting up the player for the first time.

For the price, I can’t fault it.

Should you decide to buy one, I would recommend perhaps spending another £25.00 on a decent scart lead. I know the player is cheap, but with picture and sound this good it would be a pity to restrict its performance by scrimping on this vital connection.
