Our old telly lost its HDMI input (it only had the one) and it was 6 years old and showing its age (HD ready) so looked at this and liked the price. My goodness how prices have dropped in 6 years (our LG 37″ was £1100 and that was with discount).
Ordered this on the Wednesday with next day delivery and it arrived yesterday (Thursday). Took it out of the box and found it quite light. Our LG weighs a ton next to this Toshiba.
It’s a 40″ telly so I don’t know why there are reviews here for the 32″, ignore them.
Got it all set up in no time at all and as this is full HD I was expecting great things. Then I found that our TiVo box doesn’t output 1080p so I was left with 720p that we used on the old set. BUT! My goodness, there was a major difference in picture quality. This knocks spots off our old LG. Colours are well defined and the image is very crisp, even in non-HD. Put the TiVo over to BBC1 HD and watched Nature Live in HD and the definition was superb, I can’t fault it at all. Tried a Blu-ray disc at 1080p and it was simply stunning (we only used 720p on the old one as it didn’t do 1080p only 1080i and the picture was terrible at that setting). Of course, the Toshiba being Full HD is double the resolution of the old LG and it shows.
Apple TV next (the one with the hard drive). It only does 720p maximum but the picture quality there was also stunning.
Inputs:
4 HDMI, yes, FOUR! Fantastic, enough HDMI for the TiVo, Apple TV (which I did through COMPONENT on old TV), Blu-ray player and Xbox 360.
Component.
PC.
AV (Standard res type thingy from non-HD camcorders and the like).
A couple of more that I don’t use or recall.
Oh! An aerial input for the DTV (FreeView) which is also an excellent picture).
Only one headache: The old TV had separate audio in for PC and Component. This set doesn’t. The audio in is shared so if you use component you lose the ability to use PC audio (and vice-verse). Still, get an HDMI lead for the Xbox instead of using PC input and it’ll be fine. Thanks, Toshiba, for so many HDMI inputs.
Ah! You can plug a powered sub-woofer into it as well.
The sound takes a little getting used to over our old set (which had front facing speakers), the Toshiba uses hidden speakers so the sound comes out of the back and is reflected off the rear wall. It sounded bland but then I saw that the USER setting for audio was being used and the frequency controls were all flat. Set it to MOVIE and it made a significant difference.
So, upshot is, it’s a great telly that looks nice and I can’t fault it. Do bear in mind, though, that we are coming from a HD Ready set to a Full HD set so to us the difference is startling. All night I kept saying “Look at the quality of that picture!” I thought hubs was gonna throttle me at one point, hehehehehehe.

Just what i wanted, could not be more delighted . Super large screen , light bright picture, built in HD, built in free view, nice easy assembly to put on stand. Screen picture size adjustment. Electronic programme guide.
