Seems like a bargain so far, 14 Nov 2012

This review is from: BWC (Formerly KiDiGi) 7 – Version 4.1 – Super Slim and Light 7 Inch Android Tablet with 1.5Ghz Processor and 8Gb storage running Android V4 (Ice Cream Sandwich)

Firstly, MobiCity have to be praised for their lightning-fast delivery – I chose the cheapest delivery option and the tablet arrived less than 24 hours after placing the order.
Unboxing the unit is slightly less impressive though, there is no branded packaging at all, the unit is shipped in a poly bag, in half a jiffy bag, inside a plain cardboard box. Loose in the box I found a standard USB-A to micro USB cable, a short USB-A socket to micro USB plug cable (not entirely sure what you’d use that for…) and a 5V/2A UK mains charging plug with a tiny DC jack. There is also a very brief instruction booklet, in English and Mandarin, which, being a man, I obviously haven’t read…

The unit itself is also entirely unbranded, (which is a plus as far as I’m concerned – teenagers might assume something labelled ‘KiDiGi’ is aimed at very young children). Having done a bit of research, I believe it is a MaPan or a MaiPad, made by MaiXin-China, who usefully have a download section on their website if you need to upgrade software at any time. This means that it has an Allwinner A13 CPU, which probably isn’t running at 1.5GHz – more likely at 1.0 or 1.2GHz for better stability. I’ll confirm this at some stage and report back…
The tablet has no labelling for any of the controls or sockets, other than the SD socket – make sure you don’t stuff the DC jack into the earphone socket by mistake. Unlike the unit reviewed by Engadget, this one has a black back cover to match the black screen surround. Overall build quality seems pretty good for such a cheap tablet, certainly better than I was expecting given the price.

Firing up the unit presents you with a fairly standard home screen, plus all the options which should be familiar to anyone who’s used an Android smart phone. At this price, many people are still trying to sell tablets with 2.2/Froyo loaded on them, so having 4.04 is big plus. The display looked a little dim, it’s set to around 50% brightness out of the box, but that can adjusted in the settings. The display clearly isn’t going to rival Apple’s retina display, but it is good enough for its target market – web browsing, games and as a media player. Having set up WiFi and registered a Gmail account, I checked email, and logged onto the pre-installed Google Play app store. Once I’d downloaded the YouTube app, I streamed the ‘Skyfall’ trailer – even in high quality the speed was good (I was worried it would be permanently buffering), the picture fine, and sound quality excellent through headphones. The inbuilt speaker is a bit weedy, emergency use only I guess. I then downloaded Angry Birds spin-off ‘Bad Piggies’ which installed and played without a hitch. I checked out the front facing camera, and it’s while it’s just about ok for Skype, at 0.3Mp you wouldn’t want to use it for much more than that.

That’s as far as I’ve got so far, and overall, I’m impressed, and seriously considering buying at least one more. I considered docking a star for the low rent packaging, but then it is less than £60!
Let me know if there’s anything in particular you need to know, and I’ll do my best to answer.

Firstly delivery. Cheapest option selected and the unit came by next possible Royal Mail delivery. Given that packaging was at best minimal the fact that the product was not damaged in transit must speak well of it!

I own both an ipad3 and original Galaxy Tablet. This is lighter than both mainly because it is all plastic, but it looks smart. I want the units (I intend to get another once my daughter has seen it) so that both my young granddaughters have one each. My concern, (hence only 4 stars) is the battery. It seems to take a while to charge using the enclosed charger and then has a life of about two hours with screen on a high setting and wi fi on. For me this may be a good thing as it will limit the time the girls can use it and will introduce the discipline that if they want it they must put it on charge!

So far I have loaded Angry Birds and Air Control Lite, both work as well on here as on the Galaxy and ipad, BBC i-player playing Bob the Builder looked ok (it was the first thing I found on cbeebies) and kindle but not yet down loaded a book! Web access is fine and loading speed seems ok to me. I now need to find a good parental control app. (Any suggestions please!)

The key board in Android. The unit defaults to US English but it can be changed to UK in two locations on the settings. It also seems to have auto spell correction. Setting controls are easy to follow.

I cannot comment on the manual as I have only turned over the pages but not read it. If you have experience in using other Tablets or smart phones then you probably don’t need it.

Overall very good and for what I want, a learning tool and therefore excellent value for money. Would I buy it as a work tool, no because of the battery life.

10 January 2013 update. I purchased two of these units for my Granddaughters for Christmas. They work well and give the girls something to play their favourite games on, a learning tool, both apps to help them learn Tables for example. and to learn how to use e-mail and (in due course) the internet. I have been able to add, via the PC, both music and pictures for them. Yes battery life could be better but for what I wanted it is an asset as the girls will not be able to stay on them all day!

Unfortunately one unit seemed to have a problem in that in froze a number of times including Christmas day! I also had a faulty power charge unit. Then disaster. It suffered an unexplained accident and the screen cracked. I wrote to MobiCity via Amazon and explained about the fault and the accident and asked if they could in some way recognise the fault in my purchase of a replacement unit. To my surprise and delight they have replaced the unit for me. I would therefore be happy to purchase from them again and to recommend them to a friend. Well done MobiCity!
