Works with Ubuntu!, 8 Oct 2011

I purchased this mouse to use with my Lenovo X220 running Ubuntu (11.04 ‘Natty’).

The mouse ships with batteries and a USB receiver. I unpacked the mouse, placed the batteries, plugged in the USB receiver and “snapped” it to power it up. It worked immediately with Ubuntu without any further set-up or tweaking.

The mouse is very light, fully functional, stylish and a pleasure to use. For reference, the other pointing device that I use is an Apple Magic Mouse. The Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse is a great desktop or travel mouse.

If you travel, and you hate to have the lump of a mouse in your briefcase or bag…this is the answer. It folds so flat that you can barely notice it in your bag, the reciever is so small that you never need to remove it, and it works very, very well as a mouse to boot.

Having said that – it’s just incredibly COOL. The articulation of the folding mechanism is something that 20 years ago would have been science fiction. The touchpad works very well also, and the fake “click click click” as you scroll via the touchpad is a nice touch. It also tracks on reflective white desktops that few other mice will.

Really, it’s a great product – everyone in my office went “OOOH” when I unwrapped it and demoed it. Your opinion of MS software should not cloud you from admiring their hardware…having said that, the worst thing about this is that it only works on Windows, not Mac.

Absolutely beautiful piece of kit. I actually use mine as my main mouse for my desktop PC and it stands up to all kinds of abuse, and while clearly not designed as a gaming mouse it performs admirably. I love the style and the feel of it, and I have been out and about with it with my netbook and it’s brilliantly portable – much better than those awful little travel laptop mice you can get.

That being said – within a couple of months the haptic feedback on the scroll wheel stopped working. Not a big deal to me, I didn’t care about it.

The power indicator light on mine only works intermittently so it is occasionally impossible to tell when it’s running out of batteries. However, in the seven months I’ve had it I’ve only gone through two sets of batteries (rechargeables), and that’s with several hours daily use and nearly always forgetting to turn it off when I’m done. My housemate’s LG wireless mouse eats a set of rechargeables every two weeks or so with the same amount of useage.

Possibly the most annoying is that every so often (once or twice in a 5/6 hr computer session) it’ll stop responding for a few seconds, as if the connection to the receiver has been interrupted somehow. It’s not the batteries and it’s not a problem with line of sight or distance from the receiver, so who knows. It’s possible that I’ve got a slightly faulty one but the intermittent faults aren’t irritating enough at the moment for me to faff around with trying to figure out if the warranty is still valid and will cover a replacement.
