Obscene, embarrassing and awful., 14 Aug 2012

I bought this movie for my daughter’s 19th birthday. Four of us sat down to watch it in anticipation of an entertainingly funny evening. After 20 minutes, there was no-one left watching. The film lacks genuine humour apart from a few isolated slapstick moments and contains a lot of adult and lavatorial material. It has no pace with weak dialogue and a feeble storyline.

If you enjoy gross-out scenes and a screenplay that won’t challenge your brain cells too much, then you’ll possibly enjoy Bridesmaids. Otherwise, don’t waste your cash on this rubbish.

In Bridesmaids Kristen Wiig shows what a polished comedy actress she is. She proves she can lead a film in her own right following successful supporting roles in Paul and Whip It.

Of course it helps that she co-wrote this movie but her performance is the star turn. Facial expressions, timing and overall performance are just a joy to watch.

Wiig is assisted by an ensemble of characters, the stand out being Melissa McCarthy as pocket battleship Megan (who bears a striking resemblance to Ricky Gervaise). Her scenes are laugh out loud.

I won’t go over the storyline again, as the title says it all. If you like your comedy raucous, bordering on vulgar; slapstick or farce, you will surely enjoy this.
