I’m a sucker for freebies. Whether it is the latest vitamin drink, chocolate bar or pack of tissue. Sometimes I’ve been known to walk down a road twice just so I can get two chocolate bars for free. So, when I saw this free book on Amazon that had high ratings I downloaded it just for kicks.
The story is about a man who dies in a car crash and the secret second family he has hidden for 14 years. His wife and daughter have to piece together their lives and discover the other life of a man they thought they knew. We follow the daughter as she goes on a journey to discover the secrets that the second family hold. It is emotional and heartfelt in parts and you like to find out what is happening next. There is romance, strained family relationships and it is quite a pacy read.
Now I am not a huge family saga fan or one of the people that goes gaga over mysteries. However, I did find this book hard to put down and something I would recommend to my friends. The plot is a little predictable but there is something nice about reading a good old fashioned family mystery – one that doesn’t feel the need for lots of machine guns or over the top characters. It is the sort of book you can read on a rainy day or in the park. Nothing too taxing or too literary. Just a “nice” read to while the time and I did start to care for the characters which says a lot!
Try it and if you don’t like it you shouldn’t really complain because it is FREE!

A nice family drama that you can really get your teeth into and just sit down to read and forget about the outside world. A book stuffed with family secrets, passions, drama, hate and love, the story gently unfolds after the death of Charlie Blacksworth in a car crash when it emerges that he had a second family that he had been visiting every month for 14 years, whilst telling his wife and daughter that he was heading into his cabin for some “me time”. Mainly told through the eyes of Charlies’ daughter Christine, we see her struggle to come to terms with her father’s long term deception and the existence of his other family, including a sister she never knew about.
There are other long hidden family secrets that come to light throughout the story and as other reviewers have said, it is very easy to guess what is going to happen, but the beautiful way it is written with each characters’ emotional responses to what happens, means that you just keep on reading to get to the “how” of what is going to unfold. The characters are extremely believable and likeable; as you are reading you really start to root for them and want things to work out for them. Highly recommended!
