This review is from: Sony PlayStation 3 320GB Slim Console (Video Game)
POSITIVES
* Free, functional and efficient online gaming service
* The sheer amount of high quality PS3 exclusive games. Despite what certain groups might try to say to have you think otherwise, the fact is these games are truly the games that push the limits of all console gaming within the industry and that all these games are only found on the PS3 – This is simply because the PS3 has the power and space to be able to do what it’s competition (though good in their own rights compared to PS3 in different aspects but power isn’t one of them) are simply unable to do for lack thereof of the same reason. Also the frequency of release for PS3 exclusive games is very high so there’s always games to play.
* With constant updates the PS3 is guaranteed to be an up to the times high quality blu ray player which is legitimate full 1080p true High Definition and thanks to updates is now fully 3D enabled as well.
* The PS3 is a truly awesome multimedia machine – it will play photos, music, movies, dvd and blu ray all with amazing effect. But it also has many audio features too like Dolby output, true 7.1 surround sound capability with HD audio.
* Given that it has Netflix, Lovefilm, free music video jukebox, BBC iPlayer (and ITV and Channel 4 equivalents) plus a basic but relatively functional internet browser all freely and readily available on the desktop menu plus all of the multimedia features previously mentioned – it’s not difficult to see how it would be an indispensable entertainment machine for a lot of people nowadays. It certainly is for me.
* With PS3 you will NOT need to constantly use batteries which aren’t supplied in order to use your system. The PS3 is the only console system which as standard comes with a pad that doesn’t use batteries and instead comes with a universal USB charger. So you’re not constantly pumping money at it in order to use it.
NEGATIVES
* PSN though free, it isn’t the best online service as constant updates are a pain and nor has it been the most secure platform historically. But on the flip side it’s free so I won’t complain too much. But Sony should take notice from Microsoft on this front and make there automatic game update feature a free service to all not just PS Plus subscribers in my opinion.
* Lack of backwards compatibility for previous generation titles (they’re basically re-selling them back to us via the PSN instead) sucks for us and it is a sticking point for a lot of people but me personally I get new consoles for new games not to play old ones as I have my old consoles for those games. But it’s still a negative.
* For me the PS3 pad design is too small for me personally and I’m not a fan of it’s trigger buttons – luckily there’s cheaply priced yet wonderful quality 3rd party mods that clip on to the PS3 pad which more than corrects this personal gripe of mine.
OVERALL
Ultimately the few negatives don’t affect the many positives of the system as the PS3 offers so much bang for your buck as it is that it’s pure insanity in the first place. Hence the 5 stars hands down.
In fact if anyone can demonstrate to me an online enabled gaming/entertainment machine out there for under £300 that beats the PS3 either readily or by the skin of it’s teeth in terms of features and power then I would challenge anyone to do so, because if such a product exists I want to know what it is. But it won’t happen for a while as such a product does not exist yet.
Bottom line – it’s about as highly recommended as a healthy & balanced diet!

I have been lucky enough to have owned my PS3 Slim 320gb for nearly a year now. Before I bought my PS3 I had an Xbox 360 which I was quite content with and had a good selection of games. I was unsure about getting a PS3 at first because I don’t like the idea of having 2 consoles. Reason being is that if I have both of them I would feel the need to have to get both the Xbox 720 and the PS4 just to follow up on the exclusives I’d have for each console. After seeing the PS3 hands on from one of my friends playing Uncharted 3 I left his house really wanting a PS3. So after careful thought I went to my local GAME and swapped the Xbox 360 and all my games for a brand new PS3 that came with Resistance 3. When navigating the PS3 home menu I must admit it isn’t as smooth as the Xbox’s home menu due to slower loading times which isn’t drastic. Also most games or at 720p instead of 1080p but I can hardly tell the difference. Exclusives like Uncharted, Jak and Dexter , MGS 4, Ratchet and Clank, Heavy Rain, Infamous etc are amazing and some of them games really show PS3’s stronger abilities to the 360. I am quite surprised that games like Uncharted do not sell as well as games like Halo or Gears of War. In my opinion I think Uncharted is better. I think with Sony they release the game and let it float in the market. With Xbox, they bring out a game and give it a big marketing campaigns. Overall I do miss games like Fable or Mass Effect 1 but I find that I am more happier with the PS3, lot more variety in games and I think it goes without saying that Sony’s PS3 still has a few more years left in its life. Developers have squeezed what they can do with the 360 and I don’t honestly see Microsoft or Sony releasing their new consoles till 2014. Sony even conformed that years ago. If I’m honest where the Cell Processor was very hard to program for the PS3 did have a slow start but developers are finally finding it easier to make games for the system. SO come and join all the fun. Still got many amazing exclusive to come like The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls. Hope you found this helpful.

What I love most about this console is that it’s not restricted like the XBOX 360. This actually can be used as a proper entertainment system with its music, videos, and pictures reading ability. Although the online play for games is free, it isn’t the best as it does, from time to time, lag. But that shouldn’t be a problem, considering that the servers almost always pick up the connection after to make it buttery-smooth, yet again.
One thing that bugs me about this console is that there’s no backwards compatibility with existing PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, which is a bit of a bugger, considering I have an awful lot of PlayStation 2 games lying around collecting dust. I do know for sure that the Phat PlayStation 3s have backwards compatibility, yet those consoles are incredibly prone to the YLOD (Yellow Light Of Death), which is a feature that is not in the new PlayStation 3 Slims and indicates that your PlayStation 3 has died. The Phat ones also overheat quite a lot, unlike these new, slimmer versions.
The slimmer versions, in comparison to the phat ones, are a lot slimmer, a lot lighter, a lot cooler, and last a lifetime. What’s even better is that it is fully HD-compatible (as most consoles are these days), and even though most games are considered to be for the boys in the house, there are other games suited for girls, and even the family with the added PlayStation Move that they have now released. I haven’t got the Move just yet, but my friend does, and he tells me that the console is immaculate when it comes to picking up your movements.
Overall: Perfect console, Recommended buy.
