    Haven’t Clay’d your car before – I say DO IT>….

It’s not often I run back to my Desktop to write an amazon review on a product I have only just got, But this product has got to be one of the most satisfying purchases I have made in the past 12 months. It’s brilliant and it contains everything you need for the event.

Now, I’m no professional enthusiast but it’s obvious this does what is says on the tin. I had been watching some car detailing videos on You Tube and came across the concept of Clay’ing a car. It seemed quite straight forward but I wasn’t sure what size clay bar I needed or how much detailing spray etc etc, so I decided to go for a ‘kit’. Some reviewers had claimed that there was not enough detailing solution in this kit for a family sized car, I am happy to disagree. I Have a large 4 x 4 Cayenne (BLACK), and I’m happy to say I was able to complete the whole process without worry. There is plenty to do a great job and have 10% left to show your friends what an amazing product this is. The advise is to split the Bar into three, so you can discard when you have exhausted the piece and to cover you in case you drop it. This is great advice, as When I did the front nose of the car, I noticed allot of debris from the Bumper side. To avoid scratching my body paint I immediately started with a new piece. At the very last point I dropped my 3rd piece, luck I was done.

I followed with the super resin polish (supplied) and my car looks (& feels ) fab.

Although this is the 1st Clay bar I have used, I recommend this AutoGlym product without hesitation.

PS. Use in a shaded area/garage, as the detailer can evaporate quickly.

The main purpose of claying a car is to remove microscopic contaminants from the paintwork which is an crucial preparation stage when correcting paintwork with compounds & polishes and also beneficial for waxing. I purchased this though mainly because I had little spots of paint from a fence sprayer all over my car, I tried using the strongest thing I had that is appropriate for paintwork (intensive tar remover) but I still had to scrub like crazy at each little spot. This stuff though did the job far more efficiently and left the paintwork incredibly smooth.

As you work the clay across even seemingly spotless paintwork at first you can feel a drag caused by the microscopic particles bonded to the paintwork then after a few light strokes it goes much smoother as it picks up all the particles, then when you look at the clay you can see the astonishing amount of contamination it picks up, also when you rub your hand across the area that has been clayed then an area that hasn’t you can feel and hear the difference.

I was expecting the amount of clay supplied would not last very long but there is plenty, I split it into 3 equal parts which gives you 3 pads about the size Autoglym suggests so there is enough clay to do 3 car’s (assuming you don’t drop any on the floor in which case you must throw it away). You could split it into 2 parts or not split it up at all which would speed up the process a bit. I did find I went through a lot of the rapid detailing spray as you do need to keep it well lubricated. I had to use at least half of an additional bottle I brought separately to do the whole of my Evo 8 (average sized saloon) however I probably had to use more than most people would because I was concentrating on removing all the fence paint spray, it was also very hot and my car is black so it did evaporate quickly.

The only thing it didn’t remove was a few slight traces of fly remains, however, these may well have been below surface defects (i.e. etched into the clear coat) which clay will have no effect on. It’s not a job you undertake lightly as it is time consuming, you have to also take into account that once you have completed claying you should make sure you get a layer of protection on straight away (a small bottle of Super Resin Polish is included) to help protect from fresh contaminants bonding to the paint. Also if you have a lot of tar spots on the paint it is good idea to remove them with a tar remover (not included) prior to claying, the clay can remove tar spots but it is a bit of a struggle and it will almost certainly mar the paint so it’s safer and easier to just get rid of the tar with a tar remover first.

Firstly, let’s assume that you already want to spend a fair amount of time making your car look amazing. This is not for your average (normal?) person who gets out the sponge and the turtlewax on a Sunday and gives the motor a half hour wash n’ rinse.

I’ve tried a lot of Autoglym stuff on my Candy White Scirocco and I’ve usually had good results, so I decided to go with the same tried and tested brand for my first shot at the claying process. Doubtless, there are many more specialist options that you could go with (Dodo Juice etc.) for fairly comparable prices, but this has the benefit of having everything you need in one box.

The process is not difficult, but it is fairly time consuming. After washing the car (Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner 500ml. with a lambswool washmitt, followed by drying with an Autoglym Aqua Dry), you spray on the lube to a small section – like quarter of a bonnet for example – and gently rub the clay over the surface. The effect is noticeable, and fairly instant. A panel that you thought was fairly clean becomes stunningly smooth to the touch, and all the invisible road film, tree sap etc. is gone.

Some sections need more work than others; the lower parts of the front doors on my car were covered in tar spots and these took a bit longer to come off. After doing each section, the supplied microfibre cloth makes a great job of removing the overspray and shines to a decent finish.

The kit also contains a small (100ml) bottle of Super Resin Polish. This a worthwhile extra stage, and takes much less time than the claying itself.

All in all, the kit is decent value. I used perhaps half of the lube spray, and maybe half to a third of the actual clay. The polish is only a small bottle and will just about stretch to doing a whole car.

That may sound like you won’t get much use out of the kit, but unless you’re ultra-obsessive, I can’t see anyone wanting to clay their car more than about once every six months. I might do it a couple more time over the 4 years that I’ll have the car, and it would also give a great ‘as new’ look if you were wanting to sell privately for example.

It’s a wee bit fiddly and time consuming, but the results are totally worth it.

Oh, and DON’T DROP THE CLAY!! It’s very easy to do, trust me…
