This review is from: The Amazing Spider-Man (DVD + UV Copy) [2012] (DVD)
While I generally enjoyed the light-hearted Toby Maguire / Sam Raimi films, I found them a bit too cheesey & the pacing too slow in places. Particularly the last one where everything from the trailer happens in the last 20 minutes & the rest is like a weak American teeny soap opera. Here, they have taken what is now quite a dated idea & made it relevant & emotionally engaging again. Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker is totally convincing as a socially awkward modern teen. His aunt & uncle are very well acted as well (what else would you expect from Martin Sheen?) & Rhys Ifans is just superb, giving a sympathetic side to the villain. Parker’s relationship with Gwen Stacy is convincing, too – I didn’t give a monkeys about the ‘love interest’ in the Maguire films but I did in this one.
Before seeing it, I felt that retelling Spider-Man’s origin when the other films had been made so recently seemed unnecessary but it was actually an integral part of the plot. And while the seeming astonishing luck involved in it may have sat well with comic readers in the ’50’s & ’60’s, the spin they put on it here is a lot more relevant to modern audiences while remaining faithful to the source material.
The special effects & action scenes are amazing too! I particularly liked the sequences from Spideys’ POV as he swings & scrambles through NYC like an insane freerunner & the rendering of The Lizard.
I enjoyed this film a lot more than I expected to & very much look forward to the sequels.

This Spider-man is pretty much the same movie you watched a few years back, only with Tobey Maguire in the lead role back then. The first half of this movie deals with Spider-man’s origin: Peter Parker getting bitten, discovering his powers and the death of Uncle Ben. It treads no new ground. A new villain is introduced and dealt with, albeit in a very similar fashion to what has gone before. Slightly darker and grittier than Raimi’s outings, the only thing “The Amazing Spider-man” has got going for it is its cast. The chemistry between the main actors seems genuine, and everyday scenes appear more realistic. Yet, the action scenes are clunky and clumsy, the cgi unconvincing, and as a whole, it’s a mess. Makes me long for the Raimi days and wish he had been allowed to make Spider-man 4. Why spend your hard-earned bucks and time on a film you’ve already seen a better version of?

I was a little skeptical when they first announced that they were going to make another Spider-Man movie especially since I didn’t care much for the previous trilogy! But this movie was really AWESOME! Andrew Garfield plays a very good Peter Parker and his chemistry with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone)is really quite adorable. It takes me back to when I was at school. The Lizard-Man villain (Rhys Ifans) was pretty convincing and a good match for Spider-Man since he is both powerful and clever. This movie is a little darker than the last trilogy and I really liked that because it made the movie feel more real to me and sort of brought it to life. Whether you like Superhero movies (like me) or not give this one a go, you might be pleasantly surprised! 10/10 – I Loved it!
